In-App Review Prompts: Timing Beats Frequency
Not financial advice. Verify claims independently.
Asking for a review is not a growth hack you spray on every session. On iOS, the system review prompt is tightly budgeted per user per year. Waste those asks on confused onboarding screens and you will not get them back when the product finally delivered.
ReviewScope’s operating advice for trading and finance apps is therefore about moments, not nagging.
Use the native APIs
Prefer Apple’s SKStoreReviewController and the Play In-App Review API over home-grown modal spam. Native sheets are familiar, respect platform rules, and avoid the trust hit of fake interstitial “rate us 5 stars” walls.
You still choose when to request. That choice is the strategy.
Moments that deserve a prompt
Fire after a clear success state:
- Order or paper trade filled without friction
- Watchlist or alert setup completed
- Learning streak or lesson finished
- Bug the user hit last week visibly fixed and confirmed
Do not fire:
- At first open
- Mid-checkout or mid-trade
- After a crash recovery splash
- Behind a survey that filters for happy users only (stores and users both punish this pattern)
New apps may ask earlier in the journey, but still after a value moment — just with a lower bar for what counts as value. Established apps should optimize for quality of asks over raw count.
Pair prompts with reply operations
Prompts without a reply SLA create a lopsided system: you harvest five-stars while one-stars rot unanswered. Shoppers read both. Aim for high response coverage on negatives even if positives use lighter templates.
Tag inbound reviews by theme — reliability at the open, fees, support lag, feature requests — and route them to engineering, support, or product. The prompt program then becomes a sensor, not only a star pump.
Trading-specific caution
Finance users punish surprise. If your prompt appears when quotes are stale or login is flaky, you are soliciting a one-star with extra steps. Gate prompts on health checks you already trust: session healthy, core quote path green, last critical flow succeeded.
Also keep claim language in store metadata aligned with what the prompt celebrates. If screenshots promise a calm paper-trading coach and the app behaves like a brittle live terminal, review text will say so at scale.
Measurement that matters
Track:
- Prompt impressions vs reviews submitted (platform limits apply)
- 7-day review velocity before and after prompt-timing changes
- Theme mix of new reviews (are you attracting praise for the moment you chose?)
- Reply latency on the negatives that still arrive
If velocity rises but themes skew hostile, you timed the ask wrong or shipped a regression.
Ethical line you should not cross
Never gate features behind a five-star tap. Never filter the prompt so only happy paths see it while broken paths stay silent. Stores and sophisticated users recognize coercion; the short-term star bump is not worth the long-term review text that explains exactly what you did.
Soft CTA
Open ReviewScope-style rankings, study apps that earn steady fresh reviews without looking desperate, and copy their operational discipline — not their star count alone. For a product surface users often praise when onboarding is honest, rehearse on Stock Picks and notice how a calm success moment feels like the right time to ask — because it is.
Revisit prompt timing after every major release. New surfaces create new success moments — and new failure modes that should suppress the ask until stability returns.
